Byun Anyeol's (Wonju Byun) role in the transition period from the late Goryeo to the Joseon Dynasty

  • Anyeol was a loyalist at the end of the Goryeo Dynasty and lived during the period when Goryeo collapsed, and Joseon was established. Anyeol opposed the reforms of King Taejo, Seonggye Lee, of the Joseon Dynasty and replied with 'Bulguga'.

  • The meaning of Bulguga is to be loyal to Goryeo, and the contents of the original are as follows.

Song of Indomitability

  • "Even if I bore a hole like a horse in my chest and threaded it with a rope long enough to drag it in front and behind it and pull it to the ground and tear it, I will not refuse to do what you do. I cannot bend to take away my wages." 穴吾之胸洞如斗 貫以藁索長又長 前牽後引磨且 任汝之爲吾不辭 有欲奪吾主 此事吾不屈

  • ‘Indomitable Song, Bulguga(不屈歌)’ turned out to be his poetry song. Therefore, we can get a glimpse of his loyalty to the Goryeo dynasty. The song of indomitability is also called the song of loyalty. It can be found in the Miscellaneous Record (雜錄附) of Volume 1 of the year of Gyeongsin (Wonju Byun Family Report).

Evaluation of Byun, Anyel

  • Looking at the Goryeo Dynasty to evaluate Daeeun Anyeol, it is possible that the Goryeo Dynasty might have continued even if Anyeol had not died unjustly. In Goryeo history books, it is recorded that Anyeol was executed by Seonggye Lee.

  • Looking at the Goryeo Dynasty to evaluate Daeeun (the Courtesy name) Anyeol, it was possible that the Goryeo Dynasty might have continued even if Anyeol had not died unjustly. In Goryeo history, it was recorded that Anyeol was executed by Seonggye Lee (1st king of Joseon).

  • Daeeun Anyeol returned from Wihwado with Seonggye Lee. Anyeol was a loyalist who tried to straighten Goryeo with Seonggye Lee, but Seonggye Lee tried to stabilize the country by establishing a new country. Anyeol, who opposed this, was killed by Seonggye Lee unjustly after being caught up in the case of the restoration of King Woo of Goryeo.

  • After Joseon was established, Joseon Taejo (Seonggye) recorded Anyeol as the second-class meritorious subject who founded Joseon. Seonggye visited Anyeol's house and missed Anyeol, and King Taejo of Joseon tried to give a government post to Anyeol's descendants. However, Anyeol's descendants refused. It was not until the 11th year of King Taejong of the Joseon Dynasty that Anyeol's son Yi was appointed to Sanghogun (the current rank of major general in the military rank) and received Wonjonggongsin (a title given to a person who made achievements in accordance with the king's will). Anyeol was a loyalist and the last loyal soldier of Goryeo.
