Comparison of Full Name in English and Korean Name

  • A full name in English consists of a first name (given name), a middle name, and a last name (family name, surname).

  • A name in Korea consists of a last name (family name, surname) and the name given by parents.

  • In general, the name given by parents is two letters, one letter is a Generation Character, and the other letter is a letter suitable for a generation character.

  • In conclusion, a generation character can think of a middle name as a Generation Character, and other letters can be regarded as a given name given by parents to their children. Of course, if the middle name is omitted, the name becomes one letter, and it is only the given name given to the child by the parents.

  • For example, if you look at the name "Seokyeon", the name is the 18th generation ancestor, Seok is the "Generation character" and "Yeon" is the name given to him by his parents. If you express "Seokyeon" in the English style, it may be expressed as "Yeon S. Byun".

  • The following table shows the Comparison between "Generation Characters" and Each Generation Name. The letters in the Generation Character Table are basically the ancestors' idea that this world is made up of Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water, and based on this, the Generation Character (Roller) was created and displayed as shown in the table below. Looking at the table, Generation Character comes in the first two letters of the name, once in the first letter (Gyu in the 17th), and then in the second letter ( Seok in the 18th). Complete the name by making the remaining letters that match the Generation Character. For even-numbered generations, the Generation Character is the second letter, and for odd-numbered generations, the Generation Character is the first letter. The 2nd and 3rd columns show Generation Character by generation, respectively. From the 4th to the 27th column, the names given by the parents except for the Generation Character are displayed. For example, the 18th generation name is "Seokyeon" if you combine "Yeon" and "Generation Character, Seok". "Yeon" is the name his parents gave him.

  • The 60 zodiac characters described above traditionally use the five elements to create ‘a Generation Character’, and when creating a name for a descendant, the date of birth and the hour and minute of birth are applied to the 60 zodiac characters (甲子) to make a name (Four Pillars of Destiny). These days, there are websites that will create a name for you if you provide information on your offspring (surname, generation characters, date, and time of birth) on the Internet.
